Microsoft Lync to bring unified communications for business to iPad

Microsoft has confirmed that it will release iPhone and iPad apps for its unified communication (UC) software Lync 2013 once the software has gone through Apple's App Store approval process.
Lync 2013 has already launched on Windows 8 Phone and is expected to come to Apple’s mobile iOS devices within the next few days.

Bringing UC for business to iPad will make several useful business features available to Microsoft Lync account holders with iOS devices; including instant messaging, VoIP and video calls, and viewing PowerPoint files or taking notes in OneNote when in Lync-hosted virtual meetings.

Microsoft demonstrated its Lync 2013 mobile clients at the Lync Conference in San Diego in February, when it announced that the apps for Windows Phone and iOS would be launching in March.  A Microsoft spokesman told ZDNet that an Android app will come to market in April, while Lync 2013, as expected, already works on Windows 8 and Windows RT devices.  Non-account holders can join Lync meetings from a browser on their PC or Mac.

Word has it that Microsoft is working on integrating Lync and Skype and expects to be able to deliver that integration to customers by June.

Enterprise Unified Communications deployments are increasing

Microsoft moves up to second place with 38% of voice deployments.

Recent surveys compiled by Michael Finneran, independent consultant and industry analyst, and Steve Taylor of Webtorials, show increasing numbers of enterprises are deploying unified communications (UC).   The full report is yet to be released, but they’ve shared some interesting findings.

According to an InformationWeek survey, 36% of enterprises have deployed UC, and 31% are planning to do so within the next 24 months.  A Webtorials survey found 21% reporting "full deployments", 53% reporting "partial deployments", and 16% were starting or would soon be starting their planning.

Challenging trends in fully deploying unified communications platform

To fully deploy an enterprise-wide unified communications (UC) platform is not an easy task albeit the advantages it brings. Enterprises continue to wrestle with moving their deployment from pilot phase into full-scale production. For easier deployment, it’s been identified that enterprises should blend the traditional option of on-premises Microsoft Lync deployment with optimization provided through hosted deployment. This allows the core infrastructure and applications to remain in the enterprise while media, edge and federation portions of the environment are hosted in the cloud.

Microsoft Lync moves to the ‘Must-Have’ list

Once upon a time instant messaging and presence was a ‘nice –to-have’ requirement for business but these days most project proposals require these features and list them as ‘must-have’ items. Businesses just can’t seem to continue without these features in our more than ever connected world.
